Abstract

This chapter illustrates the current crisis in prisoner reentry from the perspective of a reentry program, Root & Rebound. Root & Rebound works through a model of public education to reduce the impact of collateral consequences and barriers to reentry on the lives of people who are justice involved. The chapter briefly reviews scholarly literature on prisoner reentry and reentry programs, describes Root & Rebound’s work, and discusses the facilitators and barriers to the program’s operations and mission. We conclude that successful reentry is dependent on the degree to which individuals have access to resources that address socioeconomic and legal needs, reentry programming that is continuous and collaborative, and welfare state and penal policies that increase access to basic resources and decrease legal barriers to reentry.
