Abstract

Optical pumping has been used to investigate gain mechanisms in CdTeCdMnTe multi-quantum-well GRINSCH lasers. Lasing action has been obtained at room temperature for excitations as low as 3 kW/cm2, e.g. well below the critical density for the transition to an electron-hole plasma. Effects of temperature and cavity length on the stimulated emission are found to be consistent with the model of excitonic gain in an inhomogeneously broadened system proposed by Ding et al.
