Abstract

Hislavender-huedParisiancityscapesviewedfromunorthodoxanglessignalhiscelebritystatusasan iconic French Impressionist painter, but other less wellknown facets ofGustaveCaillebotte (1848-1894)were equally exceptional. The importance of his work on behalf of the Impressionistmovement, andhis financial help to painters such asClaudeMonet, canhardlybeminimized.Caillebottewasalso amost discerning collector. Artist, friend, sponsor, and curator for the future: he was all these things, and it made all the difference. Born in Paris, Caillebotte did not fall into the starving artist category.His father’s textile business providedmaterial for militaryventures, ensuring the family’sprosperity.Caillebotte studied law,butat theonsetof theFranco-Prussianwar in1870, Caillebotte foundhimself in a less academic atmospherewith a mandatory tour of duty in the Garde Mobile de la Seine. Perhaps itwas thehorrorsof thewar and its aftermath that redirected the trajectoryofhis life, butCaillebottewould leave a career in law behind and become a student in the studio of Leon Bonnat, a prominent artist whose works included portraiture. Inhiswork fromthis era, Caillebotte’s stylewould reflect a tendency toward Realism, but during this time hemay havebecomeacquaintedwithBonnat’s friendEdgarDegas,and through him, others in the Impressionist circle.
