Abstract

A simple approach to the problem of roof stability of shallow tunnels based upon the nature of frequently observed failures is proposed. Using the principal stress trajectories and the failure criteria respectively for the rock mass and discontinuities, the ground pressures acting upon a tunnel are evaluated for three typical geological situations: isotropic, stratified and cross-jointed rock. The paramount importance of the value of joint friction is clearly demonstrated. The optimal shape of the tunnel roof defined by the major principal stress trajectories-and criteria for the tunnel roof being self- supporting are given for the three mentioned cases.
