Abstract

Plasterk (Fig. 1) is the Director of the Netherlands Institute for Developmental Biology (NIOB), also known as The Hubrecht Laboratory. Researchers at the laboratory combine traditional and modern approaches towards the study of model organisms to achieve a better understanding and treatment of developmental abnormalities. The Plasterk laboratory studies two aspects of the biology of Caenorhabditis elegans: RNA interference (RNAi) as the mechanism by which the genome protects itself against invasion by transposons, and development of new tools for functional genomic analysis.
