Abstract

The Cambridge Ancient History (ed. J. B. Bury) is the standard work, with very full bibliographies. Volumes 7-12 (Camb., 1928-39) cover Roman history from the earliest times to Constantine. A work of cooperation, its contributions are of unequal merit, but include some of the best work of modern scholars, notably those of Hugh Last and M. P. Charlesworth. Methuen's History of the Greek and Roman World has four volumes on Rome: 755-146 B.C. by H. H. Scullard (n. edn, cl and pb, 1969); 146-30 B.C. by Frank Burr Marsh (2nd edn 1953); 30 B.C.-A.D. 138 by E. T. Salmon (6th edn, cl and pb, 1968); A.D. 138-337 by M, D. Parker (rev. edn). A. E. R. Boak, A History of Rome to 565 A.D. (Collier-Macmillan, 5th edn, cl and pb, 1965) is a sound one-volume history. Michael Grant, The World of Rome (Weidenfeld, i960; NEL, pb 1967) is an account of Roman history and culture for the vital period from the Gracchi to Septimius Severus. D. R. Dudley, The Romans (Hutchinson, 1970) gives a broad account of Roman society from the earliest times to the death of Constantine. The basic work on economics is the Economic Survey of Ancient Rome, ed. Tenney Frank (N.Y., Rowman & Littlefield, 6 vols, n.i.). There is a useful collection of original source material (translated) in Roman Civilization, compiled by N. Lewis and M. Reinhold (Columbia U.P., 2 vols, 1951-5; vol. 1, Harper pb). More recent is A. H. M. Jones, A History of Rome through the Fifth Century (2 vols; Macmillan, 1968; Harper, pb 1970). the Oxford Classical Dictionary (Oxf., 1970) is an invaluable work of reference, notable for its selective bibliographies, and now available in a new and revised edition.
