Romantisme Kereta Angin ( Sepeda Onthel ) di Yogyakarta tahun 1970-an

Abstract

This research departs from three basic things. First, the existence of the designation Yogyakarta as the city of bicycles in the 1970s. Second, there are certain holidays in Yogyakarta that use an onthel as one of the icons, as if it wants to represent the past conditions in Yogyakarta. Third, the presence of the onthel community in Yogyakarta is a form of public interest in onthel transportation. The main problem of this research is how Yogyakarta was able to be called the city of bicycles in the 1970s and how onthel were actually used by the people of Yogyakarta. The sources used include archives, newspapers, magazines, related books and interviews. The results showed that the onthel was indeed a special means of transportation for the people of Yogyakarta in the 1950s to the 1970s. The designation of Yogyakarta as a city of bicycles was basically worthy of belonging to Yogyakarta in the 1970s. In addition, onthel have several social functions, including being able to expand the interaction between communities, become a means of economic improvement, as a symbol of social status, provide space for freedom for women, and eventually become an excluded means of transportation.
