Abstract

This study applies elements of the communicative interdependence perspective to understand how jealousy messages via face-to-face (FtF) and/or technologically-mediated communication (TMC) mode segmentation/combination relate to romantic jealousy experience, expression, relationship satisfaction, and investment. Individuals (N = 604) either segmented the FtF mode or combined FtF and TMC modes to express jealousy. Further, they experienced more jealousy, and tended to express it via constructive and avoidant communication, when combining FtF and TMC modes. Jealous individuals who segmented only to TMC mode(s) had lower relationship satisfaction and investment, and those who segmented only to the FtF mode were more invested.
