Abstract

The main purpose of this chapter is to highlight key aspects of the relation between religion and the Romanian penitentiary environment. An in-depth look into the history of the correctional system on today’s Romanian territory reveals that religion has always been an important part of penal history, although its role and importance in the punishment process have shifted over time. Besides identifying the events and people who have influenced the modelling of the penitentiary system and the practice of religion in the carceral environment over time, this chapter documents the status of religion in Romanian prisons, the way religious freedom is respected, the impact of religion on detainees and future prospects.
