Abstract

In the present paper, a numerical method to treat the problem of stationnary rolling with slip and spin is proposed which is valid for any distribution of the contact area in areas of adhesion and areas of slip. The method is tested with the experimental evidence obtained by Johnson, and by Haines and Ollerton, and it is found that the total force transmitted by the bodies is very close to the experimental results, while there is a reasonable agreement as to the local traction distribution. As it is described here, the method applies only to the case in which both bodies have the same elastic constants, but by a small modification it can probably be shown that it gives a good approximation in the case of unequal elastic constants.
