Abstract

Abstract The primary role of lubricant oil is to reduce friction and wear of rubbing interface. However, these lubricants often cannot meet the performance requirements of relatively sliding mechanical elements due to the change in viscosity over the period of time and operating conditions. This article summarizes the recent progress on the friction and wear reduction mechanisms of different additives suspended in the lubricant oils. Further, the role of hygroscopic lubricant oil film of dispersed additives on the friction and wear reduction is schematically discussed.
