Abstract

IntroductionHeart failure is high impact, high incidence condition worldwide. It confronts health providers with diverse situations and difficult-to-manage contexts, thus, generating challenges to the healthcare delivery teams, including the nurse. ObjectiveTo review the existing literature referring to the role of nurses in the management of heart failure, and the characteristics of heart failure patients. MethodologyA documentary analysis of research and review studies, and other types of published texts in various data bases, using the following descriptors: “Heart failure”, “role of the nurse”, “nursing care” and “nursing”. The selected texts were organised by topics, allowing a better understanding of the phenomenon. ResultsNursing staff are committed to caring for their patients, playing important roles in contributing to the comprehensive well-being of the ill individuals. ConclusionsHeart failure is a complex clinical state, with a growing proportion of cases. Thus, it is considered a challenge for nurses who are seeking to harmonise delivery of care to improve patient recovery and quality of life through nursing care plans.
