Abstract

Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is the most severe complication after tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) thrombolysis. It greatly limits the clinical application of tPA. Early blood-brain barrier (BBB) damage may be an important mechanism for HT. Maintaining the integrity of BBB can significantly decrease the risk of HT. This article reviews the roles, mechanisms, and preventive measure of early BBB damage in HT after tPA thrombolysis. Key words: Stroke; Brain Ischemia; Cerebral Hemorrhage; Blood-Brain Barrier; Tissue Plasminogen Activator; Thrombolytic Therapy
