Abstract

Theoretical predictions supported by experimental results are presented which indicate that l→aπ charge-transfer transitions play an important role in the spin—orbit coupling of aniline and related molecules. The results consist of: (1) correlation between lifetime and polarization of phosphorescence for a series of amines, (2) effect of steric hindrance on lifetime and polarization of phosphorescence, and (3) comparison of radiative lifetimes of the lowest triplet states of anilines with those of benzene and its alkyl derivatives.
