Abstract

Abstract The National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) conducts and supports biomedical and behavioral research and research training related to the aging process, and to diseases and other special problems and needs of older people. This is done through various funding mechanisms (research project grants, career development awards and contracts) to universities and other research institutions, as well as in NIA laboratories and clinics in Bethesda and Baltimore, Maryland. NIA’s programs are dedicated to a broad range of aging research encompassing basic, clinical, behavioral, social, epidemiological, and demographic studies. There is also some applied research on interventions in common problems, such as urinary incontinence, falls, and osteoporosis, and problems of older drivers. Integrative and cross-disciplinary approaches to health problems are encouraged.
