Abstract

Management of high-risk, recurrent, and metastatic skin cancers often requires a multi-modality, multi-disciplinary approach, with involvement of medical specialists in the fields of dermatology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, and medical oncology. Medical oncologists typically treat skin cancers that have failed local therapies such as surgery or radiation and routinely manage metastatic skin cancers including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma. Here, we highlight the decision-making strategies employed by the medical oncologist in the management of high-risk and metastatic skin cancers and review the pertinent evidence for choice of systemic therapy.
