Abstract

This study examines the experience of Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) working on medical and surgical wards of a general hospital. The purpose of the research was to provide an insight into the organisation's nursing ‘culture’ and healthcare workers' perceptions as to what constitutes HCA work. Data was collected using a qualitative approach, in which in-depth interviews were conducted, transcribed and analysed. The emerging descriptions of the HCA role informed the development of four themes. These themes suggest that with due consideration the HCA role may be advanced through a process of regulation and a comprehensive programme of training and supervision.
