Abstract

Surface contact area is one of the most influential factors for increase in friction that leads to wear. Reducing surface contact area by producing textures on the surface leads to a drastic reduction in wear rate. This method is very effective in high speed steel which is used for machining in dry conditions while its effectiveness can be further increased by the application of lubricants. This research paper presents the investigation on wear behaviour of HSS using pin-on-disc dry sliding wear test method under different textured conditions. The tribological parameters like wear rate, wear resistance, material loss and co-efficient of friction were evaluated for textured and non-textured conditions. Micro dimple areal texture and micro linear grinding texture were produced on the HSS surface and the results obtained were compared with non-textured HSS surface to study the influence of surface texture on tribological properties.
