Abstract

Tiger beetles of the genus Cicindela L. exhibit extraordinary variation in dorsal coloration at the specific and subspecific levels. Most of these color patterns are structural and are caused by a specific cuticular morphology (Schultz & Rankin 1985a, b). The diversity of these colorations has led to the description of many subspecies. Over 85 species and 100 subspecies have been described for the Cicindela of the United States (Boyd 1982).
