Abstract

While the sonification step in Lohmann's [1995] shell weight paleocarbonate proxy method is necessary for the removal of detritus contained in the chambers of foraminifera shells, it has a drawback in that it preferentially induces the breakup of thin‐walled shells and hence biases shell weight measurements toward the thick‐walled end of the spectrum. This bias is particularly large for samples which have been weakened by dissolution.
