Abstract

The oxidation of butanoic acid by cerium(IV) has been studied kinetically in aqueous perchloric acid (1.0–6.0 mol/dm3). It has been found that the reaction is first order with respect to both oxidant and the reductant. Analysis of the influence of the solvent acidity permits to clarify the role of water which acts as a proton transfer agent. A reaction mechanism is proposed.
