Abstract

The process of getting matched in a residency program is quitechallenging for IMGs due to very high competition and increasingexpectations from program directors. Although, the scores in yourusmle exams and clinical skills in your desired speciality are mainpredictors of shortlisting criteria by program directors, another thingthat can add value to your personal statement is your researchexperience. Participating in research shows a program that you areresourceful, skilled, can work in a team and can finish something thatyou start. However, the decision of getting involved in research shouldbe based on your motivation and passion rather than only to showcasesomething extraordinary on your application. The importance ofresearch has further increased after the usmle step 1 scores have beenreplaced by pass/fail criteria. In this case, research experience andpublications give program directors another way to evaluateapplicants
