Abstract

The recent energy crisis due to steep rise in prices and also its limited availability throughout the world has affected the iron and steel industry very badly. This is more so in our country, as bulk of the fuel oil is imported. Hence, a fresh look is necessary for better utilization and conservation of energy in industrial furnaces.In this paper, a review of the energy saving in modern steel plants has been attempted. The latest trends for using better types of refractories, insulating materials, castables, mouldables and new installation techniques adopted in various plants have been reviewed. Advantages of using monolithic and ceramic fibres for metallurgical furnaces have also been described. The work done in the author's plant for better utilization of energy has aleo been discussed.
