Abstract

S( ANTA FE, situated on a piedmont plain in the northern part of the Rio Grande drainage area, is located about midway between Albuquerque and Taos. As the greater concentration of Rio Grande pueblos lies in this upper basin, the capital of New Mexico has numerous pueblo neighbors. Fifteen of the eighteen Indian villages in the Rio Grande basin are within a radius of seventy miles from Santa Fe (Map). In 1610 when the city was founded, its relative centrality of location with regard to the Indian population was undoubtedly a directing factor in the choice of the site. Today, the locational factor which once was significant because of its strategic and administrative advantages has become important in its economic value to Santa Fe.
