Abstract
The different roles played by the photovoltaic effect on the initial writing and erasure rates of holographic gratings in photorefractive materials is discussed in terms of the model put forward by Kukhtarev et al. Arbitrary transport lengths for the carriers are assumed. The formulae obtained for the initial rates show that the photovoltaic drift contributes to the writing but not to the erasure kinetics. Some implications of this conclusion on the analysis of the spectral dependence of the photorefractive efficiency are analyzed.
