Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most serious diabetic microvascular, and is one of the main factors of global blindness. Loss of pericytes in the retina has been long known as the earliest morphological indicator of DR. DR is a multiple factors cause disease. The cause of DR is unclear. With the in-depth study of DR, many studies reveal that the pericytes play an important role in the development of DR. The decrease of retinal capillary pericytes is the earliest morphological change of DR, followed by the increase of microangioma, capillary occlusion and thickening of basement membrane, leading to retinal vascular stenosis. Hemodynamic changes promote the further development of DR. The study of pericytes may provides a new way for the early prevention of DR and its treatment.(Int Rev Ophthalmol, 2018, 42: 36-39) Key words: diabetic retinopathy; pericyte
