Abstract

This Ph.D. work examines the role of ethnic elite in the identity discourse/politics of a community of people. It examines the emergence of contemporary indigenous elite and analyzes their socio-economic status and ideological orientations. The study used theoretical insights of different thinkers such as Paul R. Brass, Benedict Anderson, Fredrik Barth, Anthony D. Smith, and Eric Hobsbawm to understand and analyze different but inter-related dimensions of the study such as formation of community identity, construction and maintenance of ethnic boundaries, relevance or irrelevance of ethnic past, etc.
