Abstract

Climate change impact is observed by many communities across the globe in a form of increased hydro-meteorological disasters such as floods and typhoons, or climatological disasters such as heat and drought. Each disaster would have its own consequence to social and economic fabrics of the society, and the communities are forced to adapt. The chapter examines these consequences, and how NGOs are working with the communities to mitigate the impact of such disasters, thus clarifying the role of NGOs in climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Specifically, cases of risk assessment leading to resilience planning will be highlighted, as with such plans, the communities are able to plan appropriate and effective mitigation actions, as promoted by the global target E of the Sendai Framework for DRR. Furthermore, the chapter would cover how NGO sector tries to create a mechanism which individual agencies share their learning, towards the collective impact.
