Highlights

  • Cases were defined as patients with symptoms of morbid jealousy as defined by Cobb, irrespective of their other diagnoses and irrespective of whether morbid jealousy was the main presenting problem or not [1]

  • All remaining patient records, which were not readmissions, were considered as controls. Patient records of both cases and controls were perused for past experiences of being cheated-on by previous partners and childhood experience of parents having or being accused of having extramarital relationships

  • The findings of this study suggest that morbid jealousy is a common finding among psychiatric inpatients
