Abstract
When, four years ago, this chapter was written for the first edition of this book, the application of Na-Ca exchange to cardiac muscle cells was a highly controversial subject. In the intervening time, a very large amount of experimental work has been done on Na-Ca exchange, with the result that we can present a quite comprehensive picture of the limits of applicability of this mode of Ca entry to the production of contraction in cardiac cells.
