Abstract

Abstract Fluroquinolones are the synthetic broad spectrum antibiotics. These drugs have specific activity on Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. In the present study, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of the ciprofloxacin against Gram negative strains namely Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antibacterial effect of ciprofloxacin was assessed using disk diffusion method, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Antibiotic sensitivity tests were done in planktonic and biofilm condition with and without multivitamin. The diameter of zone of inhibition in the presence of multivitamin was lower in those of corresponding without multivitamin and the statistical analysis showed a significant difference in antibiotic sensitivity pattern with and without multivitamin in the disk diffusion method. The antibacterial effect of ciprofloxacin was still decreased in biofilm when compared with the planktonic form. The purpose of this study is to observe the sensitivity of fluoroquinolones group antimicrobial agent (ciprofloxacin) towards the central venous catheter associated pathogens and to check the role of multivitamins on the development of antibiotic resistance associated with biofilm formation on CVC.These findings reveal that higher concentration of antibiotic is required to inhibit the growth of bacteria when supplemented with multivitamins and in turn increases the development of antibiotic resistance.
