Abstract

Millennium Development goal of reducing the mortality of children under 5 years by two thirds by the year 2015 from the 1990 base line would require a substantial reduction in neonatal mortality in the next decade. For this we must urgently review our existing programs, and design and implement improved, integrated action plans for maternal, newborn and child health. Developed countries have reduced maternal and neonatal mortality rates by improving the skill and knowledge levels of nursing midwives. he can support antenatal care at the village level and conduct safe deliveries. They can accompany high risk pregnancy cases to the PHC. They can also be given responsibility for conducting village visits and performing health communication activities. A number of factors that contributes to the high mortality rate could easily be controlled by using competent nurse-midwives throughout all levels of the health care system. A reduction in the maternal mortality rate is also likely to occurs if the Government and international agencies work together to implement specific recommendations in maternal and neonatal health.
