Abstract
The cross sections sigma 21 at Elab=21 keV and sigma 12 at Elab=36 keV for argon ions in argon are measured using two different production mechanisms for the incident projectile ions: direct extraction from an ion source and generation by charge exchange, respectively. It is found that long-lived metastable ions are produced by the latter method, which influence the measured cross section appreciably.
