Abstract

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have evolved as a new paradigm that is revolutionizing conventional methods of teaching and learning. Since initiatives are undertaken by HRD ministry by launching ‘SWAYAM’, a platform for new India where quality education is affordable and self-learning is fruitful not only for enrolled but also for professionals and dropouts. It will also provide great opportunity to Indian students to learn without fearing from failure. In this paper author aims to explore the concept of MOOCs, its importance for universalization of higher education in India. The paper states that MOOCs has a huge potential to fulfil the needs of learners in updating their skills and continued professional development, which is essential for accelerating and ensuring social cohesion and sustainable growth. Based on findings of the study, the author suggests that, by 2025, the objective of launching SWAYAM will be successful in meeting the needs of societies by facilitating education to millions of digital citizens. In order to achieve this, the paper suggests that MOOC providers, educational agencies and policy makers, need to proceed with this vision in mind.
