Abstract

Summary Methionine sulphoximine, an inhibitor of glutamine synthetase, drastically increased the CO 2 compensation point, formate pool size and altered the amino acid composition of leaves of the C 4 grass Themeda triandra . The infiltration of 2-pyridylhydroxymethanesulphonic acid (inhibitor of glycolate oxidase), glyoxylic acid and inorganic nitrogen ions (NO 3 - and NH 4 + ) also increased the pool size of formate in Themeda triandra leaves. The results suggest that inorganic nitrogen ions stimulate an alternative photorespiratory pathway in detached leaves of Themeda triandra . It is possible that this could improve nitrogen use but lead to a decrease in productivity.
