Abstract

Given the presence of emotional violence in sports and the negative consequences it has on athletes, this study aims to examine the frequency of emotional violence against athletes in the City of Zagreb and to determine the role of the attitude that victory is the only thing valid in the relationship between exposure to emotional violence and perseverance in training despite the pain. In the research a total of 153 athletes from the City of Zagreb, by filling out a questionnaire, assessed the frequency of exposure to various forms of emotional violence and their perseverance in training despite the pain and the attitude that victory is the only thing worthwhile. The results indicate that the athletes from the City of Zagreb are exposed to various forms of emotional violence. The mediation effect analysis explained the relationship between exposure to emotional violence and training despite the pain in such a way that exposure to emotional violence is associated with the attitude that victory is the only thing worthwhile, which encourages athletes to persevere in training despite the pain. The results indicate the importance of changing the emphasis in sports from victory and results to the coaching process itself.
