Abstract
1. Conditioning volleys evoked by stimulation of muscle afferents (flexors and extensors equally) with stimuli of maximal strength for group I-over the threshold level for group II afferents-produced a prolonged (about 100 msec) inhibition of monosynaptic reflex discharges of flexor motoneurons. 2. Similar inhibition of monosynaptic flexor reflexes arises under the influence of cutaneous afferents using stimuli of nearmaximal strengthffor group α cutaneous fibers. 3. Regardless of which nerve was chosen for conditioning, a distinct correlation was seen between the inhibition of the monosynaptic flexor reflexes and the depolarization of the dorsal root fibers developing under the influence of the conditioning volleys. 4. It is postulated that the inhibition of the monosynaptic flexor reflexes may be due to lowering of the excitability of the flexor motoneurons as a result of the presynaptic block to the flow of impulses in the fibers of the “flexor-reflex-afferent” system, which is accompanied by weakening of the background excitatory synaptic bombardment of the flexor motoneurons.
