Role of Artificial Intelligence in Preservation of Culture and Heritage

Abstract

Language technology (LT) is one of the most powerful mediums in preserving the culture and heritage of a language community. The challenging task is, how culture and heritage can be preserved through LT by applying some artificial intelligent (AI) techniques in terms of machine learning and deep learning. Nowadays, the AI techniques are used everywhere to develop various tools and models for restoring and preserving the culture and heritage. There are some advantages and disadvantages in this process as it tries to optimise preservation and promotion of culture and heritage that are being restored in a digital form via AI. Some of the works were already done in this field and some are under development. The major role of the AI techniques in LT is to develop various systems and tools to deal with data with a more accurate and secured interface. LT is useful and effective in various domain like optical character recognition (image processing), text processing and speech processing, which are basically used to preserve all types of data and information in the form of image, text and sound signals. Although LT is treated as a part of the Information Technology (IT), in itself, it is a vast area as it combines both linguistics and computer science. Some of the methods of LT, which are described here, can be put to the service of preservation of history and heritage and they can process millions of historical documents, paintings, landscapes, monuments and more, in order to build a large-scale digital historical archive. The domain of IT is growing very rapidly to restore the entire world in terms of 93cultural heritage, and AI is playing an active role in this mission to make changes of all domains. That means, in years to come, new technologies, algorithms and mathematical models will be designed and adopted to revitalise all the research and application areas in preservation of our culture, tradition and art.
