Abstract
We report a crystal-field infrared transmission and Raman study of oxygenated and reduced Nd 2− x Ce x CuO 4 single crystals. Some Nd 3+ crystal-field absorption bands corresponding to rare-earth ions in non-regular sites are attributed to Nd 3+ ions in the vicinity of apical oxygens. This is correlated with a study of the A ∗ (∼580 cm −1) Raman local mode and with the transport properties of undoped materials. We show that the apical oxygen is not removed by the reduction.
