Abstract

Abstract Antimicrobial stewardship has been an effective strategy to improve antibiotic prescribing in paediatrics. A significant reduction in antibiotic use has been observed in freestanding children's hospitals with active antimicrobial stewardship programmes (ASPs) and in outpatient settings where stewardship principles have been implemented. This chapter will describe current knowledge regarding antimicrobial use in children, the negative consequences of excess antimicrobial prescribing, the factors unique to paediatric antimicrobial stewardship, and the successful stewardship strategies implemented in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
