Abstract

Commercial dithiocarbamate and dithiophosphate were used as antiwear additives in mineral oil in four-ball tests. The surface films formed were analysed by energy dispersive spectroscopy in a scanning electron microscope, using a convenient method for analysing films on substrates. The film thickness and chemical composition determined show the thermal conditions existing at the surface. Seizure and scuffing are extreme manifestations of severe wear occurring respectively at low and high temperatures.
