Abstract

A comparison of the calcareous part of the skeleton of modern Sclerospongiae and specimensfrom the Trias of Saint-Cassian (Dolomites) reveals the following similarities: - mineralogy: calcareous skeleton exclusively aragonitic; - microstructure: always spherulitic (trabecular disposition completely lacking); - developpement: two periods in the skeletal construction. The morphological resemblance confirms these mineralogical and structural criteria, indicating that the Sclerospongiae where present in the triassic reef faunas, establishing that, in this period, the Class already had a strong differenciation. Therefore, it seems possible to incorporate in the diagnose these mineralogical and structural data, which are not included in the standard classification of the fossil Calcispongia.
