Abstract

it is well recognized that drugs are often involved in sexual assault. Certainly, marijuana and alcohol are the most problematic in making an individual more vulnerable to such an assault. Recently, however, there has been a perceived rise in the incidence of sexual assault facilitated by the administration of a substance to an unknowing victim. This is known as drug rape. Two substances becoming more prevalent to facilitate drug rape are flunitrazepam (Rohypnol®) and gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB). Although stronger penalties for drug-induced rape in Canada and the United States do provide some deterrent, increased public and physician awareness is paramount to prevention.
