Abstract

This volume in honor of Professor R.L. Fosdick’s sixtieth birthday is a fitting tribute to his wide ranging contributions to continuum mechanics. In addition to his research in various aspects of continuum mechanics, Prof. Fosdick has had a strong influence in shaping the direction that the field has taken in the past few decades through the numerous students who have learnt continuum mechanics from him, both at the Illinois Institute of Technology and at the University of Minnesota. Many are the students who decided to pursue their doctoral work in mechanics after having taken his meticulously prepared courses delivered with pellucid clarity.
