Abstract

An International Symposium on rock stress and rock stress measurement was held in Stockholm, Sweden, in September 1986 under the auspices of the International Society for Rock Mechanics. The current state of knowledge on the subject, as reflected by the proceedings of the symposium, is summarized. Consideration is given to the known distributions of stresses in the Earth’s crust and their interpretation, stress measurement techniques, the difficulties of defining reliably the state of stress in discontinuous rocks, and in situ stress determinations for the design of mines and other underground excavations.
