Abstract

In this article, we discuss robustness and portability issues for parsing components in interactive speech systems. The robustness is obtained by choosing an appropriate grammar formalism. It should be well adapted to spontaneous speech effects, which are frequent in these application domains. Portability, on the other hand, can be achieved by choosing a flexible grammar implementation. We illustrate both issues by describing a stochastic parsing component implemented and evaluated for spoken language translation and information retrieval applications.
