Abstract

The main contribution of this paper is to appraise the performance of first order sliding mode (FOSMC) and Supertwisting (STC) controllers when tracking an electrically heated three way catalysts (EHTWC) solid temperature. The model of the EHTWC is developed based on similar ones approved by literature, yet it is highly simplified to be well-suited for implementation in a Hardware in the Loop framework. The reference temperature is designed to fasten the light-off temperature making the catalyst effective when lowering carbon monoxide and total unburned hydrocarbons. Numerical analysis provided in this work shows that both proposed controllers ensure full oxidation of targeted pollutants after only 75 seconds during a cold start scenario subject to exhaust flow rate disturbance.
