Abstract

This article proposes a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm based on perturb & observe (P&O) method and sliding mode control (SMC). For efficient control of the PV system, the accurate and efficient model of the system is required. The major problem has been occurred due to the nonlinear behavior of the I-V characteristic curve in PV systems. This nonlinear behavior is due to varying irradiance and temperature. In this article, the SMC based P&O MPPT technique is utilized to track the maximum power for the PV system. A two-step sliding mode control is designed. Firstly, a sliding surface is designed and secondly, discontinues control law is designed. The P&O algorithm is a simple, easy and less complex method to use with SMC. The smooth highest powerpoint is attained at different irradiances in less time. The System includes PV panel, SMC, MPPT P&O method and dc/dc boost converter. The efficiency of the proposed method can be determined by simulation. The results have been checked at different temperatures and different irradiances in the existence of load. The simulation results confirm the proposed method better efficiency.
