Abstract
As adjustments of increasingly large data sets are undertaken, the need for more efficient error detection procedures will become necessary (Pilgrim, 1991). Robust estimation is a relatively recent development in statistical analysis, and offers an alternative to conventional error detection procedures. In this paper robust estimation will be define and its advantages over conventional error detection procedures given. A unique adaptive robust procedure will be developed for detecting surface differences between two large digital elevation models of an object which have been obtained at different epochs.
