Abstract

Robotic assisted surgery (RAS) is a form of minimally invasive surgery that is just beginning to be applied to pediatric otolaryngology. Its use was limited in the past largely because of limited access and relatively large instrumentation. The advent of smaller 5 mm instrument heads and experience with different retractors gives us the potential to expand the application of RAS in management of the pediatric airway. In this chapter, we discuss the history of robotic surgery, describe the advantages and disadvantages of robotic procedures, discuss the current instrumentation, and review recent applications in pediatric otolaryngology.
